Impact Windows Engineered to Withstand Hurricanes and Home Runs

Certain Pella® windows can halt flying baseballs and others can resist hurricane-force winds. How?

In regard to hurricane-resistance, Pella HurricaneShield® windows and patio doors rated to ASTM E1996 missile D rating are meticulously tested for impact resistance.

Tests include shooting a two-by-four at the window to ensure glass stays intact. We use our hurricane cannon to propel the wood, which travels 50 feet per second.

It Started with Hurricane Testing

We figured, if we could design a hurricane window with impact-resistant glass, surely we could find a solution that could protect from home runs from Major League Baseball teams.

When Pella was contacted to help equip a historic building near Wrigley Field with home run-resistant windows, that’s precisely what we did.

We retrofitted our hurricane cannon to experiment on the home run-resistant windows. We launched baseballs from the cannon at an angle and speed that would mimic the force of a home run.

Our tempered glass resisted the baseballs best because it’s tougher and safer than standard annealed glass.

All About Physics

It warrants a speed surpassing 100 mph and a height greater than 100 feet to launch a baseball out of the park.

In Wrigley’s situation, we learned the baseballs would be traveling at about 60 mph upon striking windows.

But we went above and beyond and evaluated impact resistance up to 100 mph.

More Benefits of Tempered Glass in Pella® Windows

Even if you’re not thinking about an MLB home run hurling at your windows, there are many reasons to select tough, tempered glass in your Pella windows and doors.

It’s ideal for homeowners who want an added level of protection from their windows or patio doors. Or those who are developing the next great baseball player.

Consider the advantages and highlights of Pella tempered glass options:

  • Strong glass similar to what is used in car windows.
  • Used where cuts from broken glass are a concern.
  • Usually shatters into small, square fragments as opposed to sharp shards if broken.
  • Glass doesn’t fall apart if shattered.

Tempered glass is available in all Pella windows and patio doors. To learn more about impact windows and if they may be right for your home, call Pella of Calgary at 403-681-6363. Or, request a free, in-home consultation online.
